Bio
Joel McCray is a dynamic producer, performing artist, music educator, and composer with roots in Riesel, TX, near Waco. His musical journey began incredibly early, at just 18 months old, under the tutelage of his mother, Ruby H. McCray, mastering classical and gospel piano from 1976 to 1988. In 1988, Joel’s talents earned him a track scholarship to the University of Texas at Arlington, where he not only graduated with a BBA in Finance but also claimed NCAA All-America and conference championship honors.
With an impressive career spanning decades, Joel's creative touch has shaped 15 personal projects, including collaborations with smooth-jazz sensation Joseph Vincelli. His body of work includes the Dove Award-nominated project *The Invitation* (2011), and standout albums like “In Sync,” “Sailing,” “Cohesion,” and “The Vault”. Joel's production credits extend to over 50 projects, while his skills as a performer grace more than 70 recordings.
On stage, Joel has shared the spotlight with world-renowned artists like Kirk Franklin, Kirk Whalum, Joseph Vincelli, and smooth-jazz greats including Vincent Ingala and Peter White. His musicianship and creative vision continue to impact listeners worldwide.
In addition to his production and performance prowess, Joel has served in various churches and currently holds the position of music director at Word of Truth Family Church in Arlington, TX. His dedication to music ministry is equally matched by his passion for arts education. For over eleven years, Joel has contributed to The Artist Outreach, a Dallas-based nonprofit, where he leads virtual programming and serves as a teaching artist.
With J&B Music Ministries and Zamar, his band, Joel continues to break new ground as a director, arranger, and performer, while playing as keyboardist for Joseph Vincelli and music director for Deon Q. Whether on stage or in the studio, Joel McCray is a force whose influence continues to resonate across the realms of gospel, jazz, and education.
